In 2000, Bordeaux was born again. The town's new mayor Alain Juppé sees far... The town of Bordeaux appreciates his services and in 2008 the people of Bordeaux make him their mayor again. Juppé faught against the much appreciated Alain Rousset, old mayor of the town of Pessac (33) and prefect of the Bordeaux region. At the start of the XXI°century, the town goes through a major restructuring, the people of Bordeaux proove very patient considering all the deviations, the closed streets and the very long traffic jams especially in the morning for people trying to get to work. But the result was worth it, in 2007 the town gets to be considered patrimony of the UNESCO!! Touristic and Economic Metropolis, the world capital of wine, university and reaserch centre , Bordeaux is also a party town, full of life and young people ....Bordeaux can count on 12 districts, the town is a continuous alternation of beautiful fronts and sumptuous buildings, little charming gardens and bourgeois monasterys, renovated wine wharehouses and hangars etc. Area Bordeaux spreads itself over 4 455 hectares, and if you consider also the urban community of Bordeaux we reach 56 000 hectares. Buisness There are 16 300 establishment of which 90% have less than 10 salaried employees and 200 establishments have more than 50 salaried employees. There are between 1700 to 1900 new enterprises a year , 5 000 establishments in the urban community of Bordeaux and 15 000 new establishments in Aquitaine in ten years (5th French region for the creation of new buisnesses). Jobs - 324 500 jobs in Gironde. - 150 000 jobs in Bordeaux, of which 91 000 salaried employees in 2004 (1st of january). A highly qualified population, peple own more degrees than the national average (27,2% own a baccalauréat or a professional certificate against the 26,4% and 8,3% superior teaching graduate against the 8%). It is one of the poorest region in executives (20% actual, +19% in 10 years). Service Sectors - Industry : 1 300 establishments , 9% of the Bordeaux's jobs , 6 technology centers, 16 000 establishment and 150 000 salaried employees in this region (4th French region région) - Tertiary : 86% ecnomic network of Bordeaux and 87% of jobs, 3/4 of jobs et 80% of girondins establishments , 50 000 establishments et 238 000 jobs in Aquitaine. Population According to the last evaluation of the INSEE on january the 1st 2005, Bordeaux counts 230 600 residents, the urban community of Bordeaux (27 communes) : 660 000 of residents of which one third of the population is aged less than 25 years old.
